DJON AFRICA + Q&A
Dir. Filipa Reis/ João Miller Guerra, Portugal/Brazil/Cape Verde, 2018, 95 min
The debut scripted feature by documentarian directors João Miller Guerra and Filipa Reis, Djon Africa is a warm-hearted picaresque, following a man travelling to Cape Verde in search of his father. The subject of the directors’ previous documentary, the affable Miguel Moreira plays himself, travelling across an unfamiliar country where he befriends a varied cast of characters - often with some help from very potent Cape Verdian rum. Loosely episodic in structure, the film navigates pressing questions of nationhood and belonging with upbeat, gentle humour.
